We can use this time to review your CV, refine your job applications, or simply talk about how to learn Dutch for your career. I’ll share the same strategies that helped me go from 100 rejections to landing a job as a project manager at the Municipality of Rotterdam.Â
About the Author:Â
My name is Shershah Zahir, and I am the author of this book. I know from experience how time-consuming, expensive, and stressful it is to learn a new language—especially when your livelihood depends on it.
Originally from Afghanistan, I have lived, studied, and worked across India, France, the United States, and now the Netherlands. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture (India), a Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning (France), and a Master’s in Construction Project Management (USA). Over the years, I have worked in diverse international roles—from urban planning in Afghanistan with UN-Habitat and the World Bank, to real estate and area development projects at the Municipality of Rotterdam. When I moved to the Netherlands in 2019, I quickly realized that learning Dutch wasn’t just about vocabulary and grammar. To find a job, I also had to understand the language, culture and social norms of the Dutch workplace. It wasn’t easy. But by 2021, I began working fully in Dutch as a Project Manager for real estate development for the City of Rotterdam.
Through this journey, I have realized something important: you don’t need to learn all Dutch, you can't. You forget quickly all the words and grammar rules you don't use. You need to focus and learn the Dutch that matters at work—the language of job applications, interviews, meetings, and daily communication in the office.
That’s why I wrote Zakelijk Nederlands Leren: to save you time and to save you from the stress I went through, and to give you the tools to start building your career in the Netherlands with confidence.Â
Structure of the Modules:Â
Each module in Zakelijk Nederlands Leren follows a practical and consistent structure to make learning clear and effective:
-
Introduction
Each module starts with a short introduction that explains the professional context (for example: job applications, meetings, or workplace communication). This helps you immediately understand why the language is important for your career. -
Key Vocabulary & Phrases
You learn the most relevant Dutch words, expressions, and professional phrases for that topic. This is not general Dutch—it’s targeted workplace language you will actually use. -
Example Sentences
Every word and phrase is shown in real-life sentences so you know exactly how to use it in emails, meetings, phone calls, or conversations at work. -
Cultural & Practical Insights
The book doesn’t just teach words—it also explains Dutch office culture, etiquette, and communication style. This helps you avoid misunderstandings and integrate smoothly into a Dutch workplace. -
Practice Exercises
At the end of each module, you apply what you’ve learned through exercises and scenarios. This makes sure the vocabulary and expressions become active knowledge you can use in your own job. -
Progression Across Modules
The modules are organized in a natural career flow:-
First, applying for a job (solliciteren).
-
Then, starting work and onboarding.
-
Next, learning daily communication.
-
After that, presenting and leading in meetings.
-
Finally, working with project management tools and concepts.
This means the book grows with you—from the moment you apply for a job to becoming fully effective in a Dutch office environment.
